Mapsource registry problems
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've recently installed mapsource trip and waypoint manager v2. When I
attempt to open program, I first get the programs intro screen which is
interruptec by the following error message: "There is a problem with the
mapsource registry. Please re-install mapsource'.
Further installation attempts produce the following successive 3 messages:
1 Detailed existing mapsource application already exists...press ok to
continue
2 Same version maps installed...setup will exit
3 Wizard was interrupted. Mapsource could not be completely installed.

I've tried rolling back to a restore point. Same messages. I've also
compared file contents with mapsource succesfully installed on another
computer and they match.

Any thoughts?

Mapsource registry problems
This error pops up when MapSource can't find files that it needs, or
when the files it's looking for don't match what it's expecting. As
the registry is what MapSource uses to know what to look for, all
of these errors lead to a "registry problem" message. This is their
"catch-all" error message, similar to the dreaded GPF of the Win95
days.

Things to look for:

1. one or more TDB files is corrupt

2. some detail map files are missing or in the wrong directory

3. the overview img files are missing

4. a directory that it used to rely on no longer exists

This can be a PITA to track down becauase MapSource unhelpfully
doesn't report the specific problem it encountered.

Easiest solution? Uninstall all the map products and MapSource.
This basically nukes your MS env and you start your reinstalls
from scratch.

Better solution? Back up your HKLM/Software/Garmin/MapSource registry
key and start removing product and family keys until MapSource runs
again. Reinstall the offending product. This requires some registry
hacking and basic understanding of what the heck you're doing.

Most elegant solution? Once you identify the product/map family that
is breaking MapSource, figure out why it's broken and fix it. Requires
the above and a really good understanding of TDB files, MapSource
installation and other gory details.

Cheers,

I got the same problem. Remove asolutely everything related to Mapsource
in the registry and remove every file under Mapsource directory.

Make a restore point before doing anything and a copy of your registry.

OK) and remove the GARMIN keys found under the software key in both HKEY
Current Users and HKEY Local Machine (may not be in later.)
3. Re-boot computer letting harddrive(s) completely shutdown and then
manual turn the computer back on after 30 secs.
4. Reinstall MapSource to a new directory on the harddrive (i.e.,
c:\mapsource)
5. Repeat step 3.
6. Install current MapSource update, available for download from the

Thanks to all hwo responded. I've also received the following from Garmin
which basically is a more detailed version of same provide below it this
thread.

Thanks again,

Daniel

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS TO CORRECT MAPSOURCE REGISTRY PROBLEMS:

1. Go to the start menu in windows

2. Select the settings and then select the control panel.

3. In the control panel double click on the icon for ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.

4. Select MapSource in the uninstall window. The software will ask to if you
wish to uninstall all the components, answer YES to this option.

5. Select the Start key to the run option. In the run window type in <
regedit > and enter. In the registry editor, you need to be very careful and
please follow these steps precisely.

a. Select the (+) next to the folder stating HKEY_CURRENT_USER

b. In this view select the (+) next to SOFTWARE, when you click on this it
will open your registry further.

c. In the SOFTWARE view you will see a series of folders, one will be
GARMIN. Highlight the word GARMIN and press the delete key. It will ask for
confirmation of deletion. Make sure that the word GARMIN is the only key
highlighted. Press on the (-) signs to contract the expansion.

d. Select the (+) next to the folder stating HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

e. In this view select the (+) next to SOFTWARE, when you click on this it
will open your registry further.

f. In the SOFTWARE view you will see a series of folders, one will be
GARMIN. Highlight the word GARMIN and press the delete key. It will ask for

6. Shut down your system as normal and then let the system set for about 30
seconds and then start up your computer.

7. Reinstall the software. It will display the destination folder, if the
setting is anything other than c:\garmin, click on the browse option and
type it in. You will get a message "This folder does not exist" but the
option to create it will follow. Select OK.

8. Reboot after finishing your installation allowing the software to rest in
the destination folder.

9. After you reinstall, I recommend that you upgrade your operating software
to the latest version of the MapSource operating system.

Following are the steps to update MapSource on your computer as well as the
link to the GARMIN download site:

http://www.garmin.com/support/download.jsp

Click on the blue bar titled MAPPING PROGRAMS. Select MapSource 6.8. Please
click on the word MapSource and you will be taken to a Download page.

The Download page will have the word download on the screen. Once you click
on this it will begin trying to download the file. Please save it to the
DESKTOP. Once you have completed downloading the upgrade you will need to
run the program.

Please make sure you have closed out the MapSource program. If it is running
the update will not work correctly.

The file should be on your desktop as MapSource_68.exe. Then please
double-click on the file name of MapSource_68.exe and the program will begin
to install on to your computer.

Once it is completed you can go back and check by going into MapSource and
then click on the help and then the about MapSource.

** NOTE... to check the version of Map Source you are running or to verify
the update was complete...in Map Source, click on HELP and ABOUT MAP SOURCE,
this will display the version below the Map Source title. **

I would also recommend downloading a new copy of the Map Source manual from
our website at -->> http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/manual.html.
